Student Voice

Constitution of Ratton’s Student Representation 2008-9

“Student Voice is about students having a genuine influence on decision-making through being properly represented at Ratton.”

STUDENT GOVERNORS

There will be 10 Student Governors (2 from each Community), elected in September and serving for a 1 year term. Each Community will decide how to select their Community Governors.

2 Student Governors will be appointed to each of the following Committees:
• Achievement and Standards (results and student performance);
• Provision (teaching and learning, curriculum, and advice and guidance);
• Development (student health, safety, enjoyment, behaviour contribution to community, and economic well-being);
• Leadership and Management (Student and Staff, and progress on OfSTED issues);
• Full Governors.

Student Governors will attend at the start of the appropriate Committee Meeting. As well as contributing to discussion on relevant agenda items, Student Governors can (with the consent of the Committee Chair) add items to the meeting’s Agenda.

SCHOOL PARLIAMENT

The Ratton School Council voted to abolish itself in November 2011 and create a School Parliament. The students believed that a Parliament with a Cabinet will give more drive and focus to their work.

Ratton School Parliament will be more than just a place for Student Voice. The Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers are going to decide the areas of school life they would like to get involved in. They will, of course, be kept under control by the Speaker!

COMMUNITY COUNCIL

There will be 10 Community Council Representatives (1 from each form), elected in September and serving for a 1 year term.

The Community Councils will meet at least 6 times a year. Each Community will decide how to organise its own Community Council. Community Councils will discuss, and take decisions about, items affecting the Community. Community Councils will also act as the link between Tutor Groups and the School Council.

STUDENT COMMITTEES

Student Committees will either be permanent or temporary and each Community will select 1 student to serve on each Committee. Committees will be chaired by Student Managers and they will discuss, consult, and advise on specific issues and report to the School Council. Appropriate staff will attend Committee Meetings. Permanent Committees can be established by the School Council e.g. Library, Canteen, and School Environment. Temporary Committees will be established by the School Council, Governors, or the Headteacher, to discuss, consult, and advise on issues where a Permanent Committee is not necessary e.g. uniform changes or new buildings.
